Finding valuable information online is like shopping at a garage sale. You have to really dig. And sometimes you end up awkwardly sorting through strangers’ photo albums or settling for something just because it was the best you could find. The online world can be disappointing, full of smelly doilies, crowded and hard to navigate.

But to be a successful business you have to research. And some of the best research can be done online.

What do I mean by research?

When I say research, I mean you need to know your ideal customer, what they love, desire, fear and what is going on in their world.

If research is so important why don’t people do it?

It is hard. And it can be time consuming. As an entrepreneur you always have to think ten steps ahead. So it isn’t uncommon to start working on your website before you really know your customer. You want to change the world. You want to make a living. And you wanted to do that yesterday. Sometimes research is pushed to another to-do list for another day.

Why do you NEED to research?

If you don’t do the research you will kill your business.

Imagine walking up to a small group of people. You want to sell them a bikini. You don’t really look at the group as you walk up, otherwise you would have noticed the majority of folks were seventy-year old women. But that isn’t all you didn’t notice. You didn’t stop to see what conversations they were having before you interrupted. You didn’t make eye contact. You just bombarded them and started talking about this fabulous bikini. “This bikini will help you find love.” You belted.

You finish your pitch. And then you look around and notice the group has moved to another part of the room. What the hell you think? I have created a stunning bikini! It is made of the best materials and designed from a famous Italian fashion designer. Not to mention a portion of the profits go to help single mothers around the globe. Who wouldn’t want to look good and help women?

This happens online all day every day. People have great business ideas. The problem is they didn’t do the research. They don’t know their customer.
